Grout of the blue

This kitchen is living proof that even the smallest kitchen designs can have big personality—and sometimes even a little surprise up their sleeve.

This sweet little kitchen was designed to do two things: make the most of a compact footprint, and let the client’s incredible collection of art, ceramics, and accessories truly shine. With so much beauty already in the space, the kitchen didn’t need to shout—it just needed upgraded finishes and to be given the chance to have a little fun.

White oak cabinetry brought streamlined lines and as much storage as possible, while the expanded counter space was complete with a minimal, concrete-look quartz. But the real showstopper in this kitchen's material palette was one that came to be riiiiight at the end of the reno.

Enter: the backsplash. A simple, soft blue tile set the tone, and the unexpected navy grout made everything about the materials in this design sing. Just the right amount of bold, it added depth, contrast, and a tiny spark of joy—proof that sometimes even the smallest design decisions (like grout!) can have the biggest impact.

Clean lines, open shelving, and a light, airy palette let the client's treasures take center stage, while subtle details kept the space from feeling too quiet. Resulting in a kitchen that is first and foremost practical, but also playful, personal, and full of soul.

Yes, design can be simple. But it can (and should) also be fun, brave, and sometimes a little unexpected.
